AIBD First Meeting Wrap Up for 2010

david_avatarThe Florida Society AIBD just finished up our first meeting of the year in beautiful Sanford Florida. Member attendance was beter than expected and, I want to personally thank all of you that came out to join us.

Electronic Systems Design (ESD) is one of our newest Corporate Members and was on hand to give a presentation on home automation. This was only one of the many different classes that they have to offer, and they have agreed to work with us again at our next function. Additionally, you will read below that, ESD is hosting another event that I hope to see AIBD members attend. Lutron will be in town with their Smart to Dim Experience. Information on this is listed below on the flyer.
Millwork International, Inc. is also one of the latest companies that we've had the pleasure to meet. Millwork International offered their place of business to the AIBD to hold our meeting. Thank you. If you were unable to attend the meeting, you must visit their website to see the kind of work they do. The level of artistic craftsmanship is something beyond what pictures can show.

The Intitute of Classical Architecture is putting on their next event at Millwork International. David Case will be in town to give a seminar.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Tony Weremeichik, Susan Berry, and Tic Childers for the incredible job they did in working as a team to pull this meeting together. Events like this don't happen by themselves. Thank you.

We have already begun planning for our second meeting which is scheduled to be held in Ft. Lauderdale Florida. Full event details will be provided as soon as they are confirmed. Stay in touch as we move into a new era for the AIBD.

Respectfully
David Pillsbury, AIBD
President, Florida Society

UCF to Start Architecture Program

UCF will partner with Valencia Community College and the University of Florida to launch a new Bachelor of Design program in Architecture starting in fall 2010.

Approved Thursday by the Board of Trustees, the program will prepare students for a variety of careers, including professional architecture, construction management and industrial design. The median annual salary for design professionals is about $72,000, according to Workforce Florida.

Students will take two years of classes as Valencia students and two years as UCF students. They then can move on to obtain their master’s degree, potentially by staying in Orlando and enrolling in a University of Florida College of Design program based in UCF’s Center for Emerging Media in downtown Orlando.

The Valencia and UCF classes will be taught at the new University Center building shared by the two schools at Valencia’s West Campus. The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects has worked closely with Valencia, UCF and UF to develop the program.
