Meeting No.1 - 2012 | AIBD - Florida Society | Sarasota, Florida
February 24th and 25th, 2012
The Florida Society American Institute of Building Design [AIBD] will be holding it's first meeting of 2012 in Sarasota, Florida. Please mark your calendars and save the date to attend. We're mixing it up again and introducing a little modern architecture to our tours.
The AIBD has had a lot of classes surrounding the classical and we feel it's about time to share some good modern examples. We are in the process of working out the education venue and making the arrangements. We will also be posting details as soon as they become available.
We are still finishing up the research on the accommodation but, we did get word about two nice hotels in the area. There is a Hampton Inn on the other side of the interstate and a Holiday Inn just up the street from the Cannon Office. The Hampton Inn is a bit further than the Holiday Inn but, has plenty of food choices in walking distance. There are no plan fro AIBD to reserve a room block at either location so, feel free to make your reservation early at the location of your choice.
Friday, February 24th - Board of Directors Meeting
Saturday, February 25th - General Membership meeting, Educational Events, and Architectural Tour.
A detailed schedule will be provided as soon as the commitments have been made. However, if you would like to plan early, please RSVP to help our planning efforts.

January 16, 2012. What’s happening @AIBD_national?
…The
end of an era for a TV icon.
This is the first week in nine years that Ty Pennington will
not surprise a family by running out of a motor coach screaming,
“Good morning [Your] family!!”. Instead, it’s, “Bus driver…park that bus.”
Last Friday night ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition aired
their 200th and last episode. The show concluded by building homes
for seven families in seven days and a community park in Joplin, MO,
a town wiped out by a tornado last summer.
If you missed it: http://abc.go.com/shows/extreme-makeover-home-edition
“The show’s good works, education and entertainment
will be missed.” Says AIBD Executive, Steve Mickley. “Fortunately, out of over
200 families, I was lucky to have helped touch the lives of
a few while representing AIBD on three EMHE builds; South Central LA,
Voluntown, CT and Hyattsville, MD. The last with my youngest son, Hayden.”
In fact, AIBD has touch the lives of more EMHE families.
From the reports sent to the national office over the years, many have donated
time working on projects and at least three members have designed and built
EMHE homes. The first to our knowledge was Kevin Gray (FL) who designed this
beautiful home for the Harveys (http://www.kevingray.com/gallery/articles/extreme).
Then Bruno Hayn (CT) designed and constructed this home for the Girards (http://www.extremehomebybruno.com/).
Finally, just this past summer, Ron Danne and Justin Lipe, working with
P&D Builders, designed and built a home for the Rhodes (http://pndbuildersltd.com/photo-gallery/category/19-extreme-home).
Displayed above, the 4200 square foot Italianate house was featured on a
2-part this past Christmas.
In 2006, the AIBD national convention featured Conrad
Rickets as its keynote speaker. Conrad was one of the show’s creators and
at the time was the executive producer. He told AIBD members in Memphis,
TN, about scouting out the first home to be made-over. “We were intending to
just create another home improvement show when I found a house that looked
terrible but was in a neighborhood surrounded by beautiful homes…after stopping
in front of the house three times I decided to stop and ask why.”
Conrad shared with us. “It turns out the husband of the woman
who owned the home had passed away and she couldn’t keep up the
maintenance…suddenly, the premise for the show was discovered.”
Thanks ABC and Extreme Makeover Home Edition for inspiring
an industry and a nation to help our neighbors.

…FREE pubs.
Sorry for the text language…we’re not tauting drinking
establishments giving away free beverages, instead AIBD has arranged with two
national magazine publishers to extend free subscriptions as a benefit of
membership. But we got your attention didn’t we? ;-)

its industry magazine Electronic LifeStyles. The latest edition
features the winners of CEDIA’s 2011 Electronic Lifestyles® Awards competition.
See the winning projects in such categories as Home Theater, Integrated Home,
Media Room, Hidden Installation, and more.

Also, Concrete Decor magazine has joined AIBD as a
national Corporate Member and is offering free subscriptions to its monthly
publication. In addition, next month at the Concrete Decor Show, it will be
announced that there will be a new Exposed Concrete category added to the 2012
American Residential Design Awards.

Made in America Christmas: Are You In?
There has been quite a buzz recently and it’s heard all
across the USA throughout the AIBD and beyond.
The concept of buying American isn’t a new one and I’m sure everyone’s
heard it before but, for some reason it appears to be different this time.
Very few topics have gathered as much
interest as this story has in such a short period of time and I encourage everyone to check out the Diane
Sawyer story on Buy American by clicking the image to the left
|
|
"World News" Wants to Hear from You
"World News with Diane Sawyer" is gearing up for a
"Made in America Christmas" and we need your help.
The average American will spend $700 on holiday gifts and
goodies this year, totaling more than $465 billion, the National Retail
Federation estimates. If that money was spent entirely on US made products it
would create 4.6 million jobs. But it doesn't even have to be that big. If each
of us spent just $64 on American made goods during our holiday shopping, the
result would be 200,000 new jobs.
Now we want to know, are you in? If so, we want to hear from
you. How are you planning on spending your $64?

AIBD: Spec American
I have a feeling there are some wondering why or how this “Buy
American” article is relevant to the AIBD and why would I post this here. The New Year, 2012 will host many new things
for the American Institute of Building Design.
The Arizona Society AIBD and Steve Mickley were recently speaking about
the concept of buying American and the question was raised; “wouldn’t the
phrase be more relevant to the AIBD if it was “Spec American?”
Personally, I think this is a great idea and I’ve committed
my efforts in both the buying and the specification of American made products
into the designs that I’m responsible for.
I challenge the same of every single Member of the American Institute of
Building Design to do the same.
I plan to display a Buy American and or Spec American image
long after this story gets archived in support of this effort. I hope you’ll join me in spreading the word.

Welcome
Seminole State College - Student Chapter
The Florida Society AIBD would like to welcome the students and staff to the American Institute of Building Design. Seminole State College is our newest Student Chapter and represents our latest efforts in advancing the profession of residential design.
The Florida Society AIBD is continuing to plan for the future by rethinking old processes, questioning old procedure, and opening the doors to generations to come. There are many projects and programs under development that will surely be of interest to both Students and Professional Members.
The AIBD offers student the opportunity to intern in professional design firms, participate in design competitions, and most of all, take an active role in the leadership of the organization to further their experience as professional in the design community.
